I’m so excited to introduce y’all to Kristi Ann Hunter, an historical romance author I met a couple of years ago at the Nashville Christian Fiction Readers Retreat (CFRR). Perhaps the two things I remember most about Kristi Ann were her fantastic sense of humor—this girl can giggle, y’all—and the fact that she was on the “kisses to remember” panel discussion.
Yep! Evidently, this gal is among THE BEST Christian authors to describe the most beautiful—and tactful—romantic kisses in Christian fiction. She’s talented at much more than that, however, and she’s gonna share a bit today about what she’s learned about being a published author.
Thanks, Kristi Ann!

10 Things I Wish I’d Known Before I Started Writing

Kristi Ann Hunter here, hanging out with the amazing Mesu Andrews.

The first time I took my family to Disney World I spent weeks scouring the internet for tips on what to pack, how to navigate the parks, where to eat, and even how to get the best interactions with the characters.

I didn’t do that before I started writing. Instead, I threw myself in and tried not to drown which made me totally unprepared to learn these ten things.

  1. There are people who read 300+ books a year. I am amazed, awed, and just a little bit scared.
  2. Some writers work 1-2 years in advance. At any given time, I’m writing one book, editing another, launching a third, and promoting a fourth.
  3. There are approximately 3,042 ways to procrastinate that will leave you with a false feeling of accomplishment. *cough, cough * Facebook *cough*
  4. The industry has a lingo all its own. For instance, right now I’m really struggling to determine the GMC for my H/h in my WIP so it will zoom to the top of everyone’s TBR piles. Yeah. I’m still not positive I know what it means either.
  5. I would find a tribe. You get a few funny looks if you try to speculate on the latest Karen Witemeyer novel in line at the grocery store. Now, though, I have a whole world of friends who will not only speculate and fan girl with me but take me to new heights of book obsession and appreciation.
  6. It is possible to be jealous of and truly happy for someone at the same time. There’s never a bigger confliction of emotion than cheering for the friend who just beat you out for an award, got a great new opportunity, or came up with a fantastic new idea.
  7. Creativity can be regulated. Sort of. Sometimes. Okay, productivity can be regulated. And the more often I’m productive, the more often the magic shows up.
  8. There are a lot of authors. We’re like rabbits. We keep inspiring and spawning more writers which is amazing, but I now have so many writer friends, I couldn’t read a book a year by them all. Even if I were one of those 300+ peeps.
  9. In the publishing world, there is nothing more frightening than a book release, more thrilling than a fan contact, or more humbling than seeing God use your book to touch someone’s life.

And, probably the biggest thing I didn’t know before I started writing is…

  1. I can actually write an entire book.

I’m honestly still continually amazed by this. My grammar knowledge is limited at best, probably more accurately described as poor. Eventually I found my own way, discovered my strengths, and surrounded myself with people who could help me in my weak areas.

Never be afraid to try something new. You never know what you’ll be able to accomplish or what you’ll learn along the way.

A firm believer in the idea that God has a sense of humor, Kristi Ann Hunter enjoys writing books that take a light-hearted look at the deep realities of life. Award-winning author of the Hawthorne House Regency series, Kristi lives in Georgia chasing God, dreams, and three energetic children with her wonderful husband.
