Embracing Eventually

boy & peasWhen you must eat something you don’t like, do you eat it first or save it ‘til last? I’m an eat-it-first kind of gal. If I see a hard thing on the horizon, I get through it as quickly as possible.

A chilly swimming pool? I dive in!

Unavoidable mud puddle? I slog through!

Why Ask About Eventuallys?

I’ve started reading in Hebrews for my quiet time, and I was struck by Heb. 1:1-4. It tells us that Jesus is God, actively involved in creating the universe. He was the exact representation of God on earth, and He sustains all things by His powerful word.

THAT is the Jesus who loves me–and you!

But I was also struck by the emotional struggle between the human and divine…

“After [Jesus] had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”      Hebrews 1:3b

Why did our Lord Jesus sweat drops of blood at Gethsemane when He knew heaven was coming next?

Because heaven wasn’t next. Heaven was coming…EVENTUALLY. And we all struggle with EVENTUALLY, don’t we?

In His humanness,  Jesus dreaded the suffering, humiliation, and spiritual separation that awaited Him on that Cross. That’s why He sweat drops of blood. Yes, He knew He’d EVENTUALLY sit at His Father’s right hand, but the next several hours for Him would be a very real test of His humanity.

I believe Jesus, like us, dreaded Eventually–that bridge between point A and point C. And though EVENTUALLYS are necessary, they’re oftentimes tough.

I Hate Eventuallys

I believe Jesus in His humanity grew tired of eventuallys too. Remember what He said to the disciples after His transfiguration, when He came down the mountain and found His disciples unable to rid a boy of a demon?

“You unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?”  Matthew 17:17

That’s more than just a cranky Savior. Jesus was Homesick. He was tired of Eventually and was ready to be reunited with His Heavenly Father.

I’ve faced some hard eventuallys. How about you? Maybe you were downsized and are waiting for the Lord to open the door for your next job. Maybe you’re fighting a battle with cancer or some other health issue. Perhaps your children have walked away from the Lord, and you’re trusting God for their salvation. We face lots of Eventuallys in this life, and some are truly AWFUL!

But none equal Gethsemane. Jesus has overcome the worst to give us His best.

Our God Outside the Eventuallys

I’m glad Peter gave us this important reminder:

“Do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.”      1 Peter 3:8

However, in our humanness, we must deal with time and the consequences of eventuallys just as Jesus did. We must look at the thing we dread and know that eventually–in God’s time and in His perfect way–it will pass.

Dealing With Eventually

I doubt any of us will sweat drops of blood, but we know the dread of facing hard decisions, difficult conversations, and strained relationships. How do we endure the Brussel sprouts so we can enjoy the chocolate cake?

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”          Hebrews 1:3a

Jesus, who poured Himself into humanness, is the same God who sustains all things—even our eventuallys—through His Word! A daily, hourly, momently dose of Jesus is the remedy to sustain us through whatever comes eventually because He stands outside of time and isn’t buffeted by the storms that rock our lifeboats.

Take heart, dear ones! This earth is not our home. We will all see Him face-to-face…eventually!

Today’s Question:

  • How do you live through your eventuallys?

  1. Hi Mesu, Powerful devotional and it resonated with me bringing to mind the ‘eventuallys’ in my life. It is comforting to know there is light at the end of the tunnel but the journey is a difficult one. What a comfort to know that my Jesus that walks beside me is the one who will carry me through my ‘eventually’s. Thanks for the reminder of God’s mercy and grace! Blessings, Linda

  2. Thanks, Mesu. That was an encouraging post. I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I’m 50 and the thought of dealing with it for the next 30 years till eventually happens is discouraging, but then illness weans you from this life, and I look forward even more to that day when sickness will be no more. In the meantime, He will see me through.

      Hi Pia!
I’m so sorry you’re facing this diagnosis. I, too, heard those same words in ’97 when I was 34 years old. Some days are easier than others, but through the years I’ve learned that the more I concentrate on something else, the less I notice the pain. I try to make that “something else” Jesus. 😉 He usually takes the form of Bible study, writing devotionals and novels, etc.–but the point is…find something you love to do and immerse yourself in it. That’s been the best medicine for EVENTUALLY that I’ve found. 😉 (I also deal with daily migraines.)

You’re absolutely right to focus on the single most glorious eventually! One day we’ll see Him face-to-face! Woohoo!

      Blessings, dear one!
