On a recent Sunday morning at church we sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” This is a hymn I have heard many times throughout my life. I was particularly drawn to the words, “His mercies are new every morning.” I thought, Wow, I don’t get leftover mercies, I receive new mercies every day!
God’s mercies are abundant and never-failing. When I am weary, He lifts me up. During the times that my burdens are heavy, He carries me. When my days are dark and cloudy, He sees beyond the clouds and knows what’s on the other side. I can trust Him completely with everything.
I am thankful to songwriter Thomas Chisholm who wrote “Great is Thy Faithfulness” based on Lamentations 3:22-24.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!”
This was a testament to God’s faithfulness through Chisholm’s very ordinary life. That gives me hope for my ordinary, but at times, complicated life. I know that if God brings me to it, He will bring me through it.
During the difficult periods in my life I have faced that truth many times.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
If I have hope, faith, and God’s new mercies, failure is not an option!
