Forgive the poor lighting in the picture of Jenifer Jennings and me, which was taken at the 2023 Florida Christian Writers Conference awards night, right after she’d won another award! 😊 We met face-to-face for the first time at that conference after having been “email friends” for almost a decade! Jenifer’s latest release, Salome (The Servant Siblings, Bk #7), is the first book I’ve reviewed on my site, but not the first I’ve enjoyed!
Book Description:
From quiet obedience to bold defiance, Salome’s stand places her fate in jeopardy.
Salome bat Joseph struggled to make herself heard as the youngest of eight siblings, often choosing silence over conflict. Raised fatherless and cared for by her oldest brother Jesus, His strong, nurturing presence was the only fatherly influence she had known.
After Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah, Salome eagerly followed Him, inspired by His strength and the transformative power He represented. Under His guidance, she learns to use her voice to advocate for change and to speak the truth with boldness.
When the Pharisees send one of their own to hunt down followers of the Way, Salome bravely speaks out against them. Her defiance leads to her imprisonment by the Romans, leaving her fate uncertain. Will Salome’s words secure her freedom, or will they seal her doom?
Explore the passion, conflict, and sacrifice of the early church in Salome, Book 7 of the Servant Siblings series.
My Review:
4 1/2 Smiles – 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 1/2
Jenifer Jennings is a prolific and skilled writer whose powerful novels about fictional or minor characters in the Bible reach into your soul. When I first heard she’d written Salome, the 7th book of her Servant Siblings series, I thought, how compelling could a story be about Jesus’s youngest sister? WOW! I was so wrong!
Salome’s story begins when she and her mother, Mary, visit Jesus’s empty tomb–two years after His resurrection. I had to stop reading and put myself in Salome’s place. The empty tomb wasn’t a reminder of Jesus’s death but rather a constant declaration of His divine power! Memories of my readers’ tour in Israel, 2020, came rushing back. Our group visited the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. When I went inside, worship overwhelmed me. Jenning’s (fictional) description of Salome’s visit to the tomb was about renewal. Isn’t that what worship does–reviving a dark soul in the presence of Jesus’s glorious Light? As I continued reading Salome’s story, I realized she needed that physical reminder of her Brother’s power and Identity to survive the days of persecution in the early church.
With every devastating blow Salome (and the early church) endured, the Lord’s sovereignty and dominion infused my heart with encouragement. Fans of Connilyn Cossette, Tessa Afshar, and Angela Hunt will enjoy Salome’s well-researched, emotional, and triumphant story.
