He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4 (ESV)
Picture this…Jesus wearing His tallit (prayer shawl). Can you see Him in your mind?
“ENCOUNTER” – Magdala Chapel Mural Canvas Replica
In Luke 8:42-48, we read about the woman with the 12-year blood flow. We are specifically told that this woman “came up behind [Jesus] and touched the fringe of His garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.”
Word & Wings
The English word “fringe” is a translation of the Hebrew word “tzitzit,” which are the individual threads (fringes) that hang from the four corners of the tallit. In English translations of the Bible, we use the word “borders” to indicate the four edges of the prayer shawl, but in Hebrew the word is “kanaph,” which means “wing.”
Picture Jesus’ Wings
Imagine Jesus putting His tallit on. Picture His arms stretched out. Can you picture Jesus’s mighty wingspan? Can you see the tzitzit in the four corners hanging down? Now imagine entering that space and hugging Jesus. When He hugs you back you are fully enclosed in His wings!!!
Favorite Psalm
Psalm 91 is my most favorite Psalm in all of the Bible. I think it is absolutely beautiful. And, it always makes me think of Jesus. I love the imagery of Psalm 91:4: our mighty and all-powerful God spreading His wings over His people, bringing them into His safety and protection, wrapping them into Him. It’s simply gorgeous. It’s a wonderful metaphor for how God takes care of and protects His children.
Wings for Today
What I love the most is that Jesus illustrates Psalm 91:4 in His interaction with the woman with the 12-year blood flow. It is in the wings, the place of refuge, that this woman found her healing and peace. The same is true for us today. When we go to Jesus, He will open His arms to us EVERY SINGLE TIME. His wings are a place of refuge! If you need some healing, peace, and security today — run to Jesus. He has His pinions opened wide ready to take you in!
