Today’s devotional is a continuation from the August 27th newsletter, you can read Part 1 HERE.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19 (emphasisadded)

As I meditated on the reasons I can be content, this phrase from Ephesians 3:19 continued to roll around in my head, “…that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God”.

How Can I Practice This Daily?

I read and reread Ephesians several times over. As I did, so many other phrases jumped out at me. I jotted them down in a notebook in my purse and they sat there. I was at a loss for what to do with them.

For Mother’s Day, I scheduled a week of vacation to Dauphin Island, Alabama. God opened some doors to enable us to afford to go, and our family needed it. This past school year had strained our family to its breaking point. We needed a getaway to regroup.

As I stood there staring at the expanse of ocean, I just wanted to reach out my arms and hold on to it. All I could think was, “God can hold this ocean in His arms, yet His love for me is greater than this vastness.” That is when all the phrases I had been holding on to came together into this prayer.

Prayer For Contentment

All of the lines come from Ephesians, except for the reference to Hebrews 12:2 in the last line:

  • Dwell in our hearts through faith (3:17)
  • Enlighten us to Your hope (1:18)
  • Strengthen us with Your power (3:16)
  • Be our peace. (2:14)
  • Do more than we can possibly imagine (3:20)
  • Build Your dwelling in purity (2:22)
  • Conform us to Your purposes (1:11)
  • Humble us in unity. (4:2-3)
  • O, the expanse of Your love is beyond our reach (3:18-19)
  • While the length of Your love stretches out to the least, To dive into the depths of Your wonder is all we can do, For we’re captured by the fullness of You. Lavish us with wisdom and understanding (1:8)
  • Show the riches of Your grace (3:7, 16)
  • Grow us, join us, and hold us (4:15-16)
  • All the darkness displace. (5:8)
  • Prepare us to serve in truth (4:12, 25)
  • Complete the work You are authoring (2:10)
  • Stand us firm in Your holiness (5:13)
  • Make us a fragrant offering. (5:2)

O Lord, the expanse of Your love is beyond our reach. While the length of Your love stretches out to the least. To dive into the depths of Your wonder is all we can do. For we’re perfected with the fullness of You.
