For our Deep Dive Wednesdays, we try to practice what my husband described to me as “lateral thinking.” He found a great illustration on someone’s Facebook post that I’d like to share with you here:
During World War II, fighter planes would come back from battle with bullet holes. The Allies found the areas that were most commonly hit by enemy fire. They sought to strengthen the most commonly damaged parts of the planes to reduce the number that was shot down.
A mathematician, Abraham Wald, pointed out that perhaps there was another way to look at the data. Perhaps the reason certain areas of the planes weren’t covered in bullet holes was that planes that were shot in those areas did not return. This insight led to the amour being re-enforced on the parts of the plane where there were no bullet holes.
Deep Dive Studying
Perhaps we’ve read certain passages of Scripture so many times that we skim over truths, thinking we already know what it means.
In our Deep Dive Wednesdays, we’ll apply a little lateral thinking to our Bible reading, study God’s Word in small chunks of 2-4 verses at a time, and we’ll look where the bullet holes ain’t!
We’ll mull Scripture slowly and give Jesus time to reveal new things as His Holy Spirit reveals Himself in powerful new ways. Ready to start?
